New Year’s Eve was lovely. New Year’s Day was a different story.
I spent most of it oxidizing ethanol into acetaldehyde, then into acetic acid. Alcohol dehydrogenase handles the first step, and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase handles the second. I seem to be one of the many people whose versions of these enzymes work less efficiently, so hangovers hit me harder than most.
I also sprained my foot cycling home in high heels. Don’t ask. It involved a cat, some fireworks and a curb that appeared out of nowhere.
A couple of days later I was fine. Really.
